I’ve shot various scenes from a RED One camera and my Canon 7D that are perfect for Winscape viewing. Here are some recommendations on equipment:
*Canon 7D or Canon 5d Mark ii video DSLR cameras.
*Zoom H4n field audio recorder.
*Manfrotto tripod.
*Final Cut Studio editing software.
Here are some general guidelines to help you shoot footage that will look good in a Winscape:
*High resolution. More pixels = more detail. 1080p should be a minimum. RED shoots at 4K (4096x2048) which is the best. You’ll just need to scale down to 1080p for real-time playback. The 4K resolution makes for a more detailed image even after scaling down.
*High frame rate. We aren’t going for a movie look here. We want realism. 30fps or more if possible.
*No zooms, no pans. Unless you want your view to look like your house is spinning inside of a tornado.
*For typical landscape shots, you’ll want the horizon to display at the eye level of the average person in your room.
*10 to 15 minutes per cut.
Below are examples of the scenes I’m using in my Winscape now. We plan to keep shooting and offering more scenes as time goes on. Low-resolution footage is posted to YouTube and links to high-resolution still frames are below each movie so that you can judge the level of quality. I’m offering footage that I own the full rights to for a fee. Purchase prices vary to help cover the cost of distributing the large amount of data and equipment purchase and/or rental. Stated prices are for private, not-for-profit use only and can be purchased and downloaded online. If you have other needs, feel free to contact me to work out the terms.
